Treasures of JapanA catalogue of Japan's designated cultural properties 2,690 works catalogued

About this catalogue

Treasures of Japan is a catalogue of the National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties of Japan held in the country's national collections — the Tokyo National Museum, the Kyoto National Museum, the Nara National Museum, the Kyushu National Museum and the Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan. It currently lists 2,690 works: 702 National Treasures and 1,988 Important Cultural Properties.

What this catalogue is — and is not

The records come from ColBase, the collections database of the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, as aggregated by Japan Search, the national portal run under the National Diet Library and the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Every entry here is a work in those national collections, shown with its photograph, its holder and a link to its official record.

It is not a list of every designated cultural property in Japan. Designated buildings — castle keeps, shrine and temple halls, historic houses — are barely present in ColBase, and the great majority of designated works of art are held by temples, shrines, universities and private owners, outside these collections. Where this catalogue is silent, it is silent because the work is outside its stated scope, not because the work does not exist.

How entries are made

Designations

National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties are designated by the Government of Japan under the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties. The designation shown on each entry is the one recorded in the official record.
