[Illustrated Story of a Pilgrimage to Fifty-Five Deities] was based on the [Flower Garland Sutra], which was highly regarded at Tōdaiji Temple in Nara. Many paintings depicting scenes from this story were created around this temple. In the story, the protagonist Sudhana sets out to consult with 55 learned beings as advised by the bodhisattva Monju.
