Seiryōji Temple in Kyoto was founded by the monk Chōnen (938–1016), who traveled to China. He was drawn to images of Buddha Śākyamuni in China, and had a similar sculpture made there to bring back to Japan. The sculpture has been admired for its unique form and origin story.
