This photograph shows the unusual pagoda of Yakushiji Temple in Nara. It is the only known example of a three-storied pagoda with six roofs, three of which are ornamental. The top of the spire is decorated with images of flying heavenly beings in openwork, an example of decorative art from the Nara period (710–794).
