The name comes from its former owner, the Maeda family who was the feudal lord of Kanazawa. Most of volume 2 and a part of volume 4 are bound together. The paper is considered to be karagami (Chinese paper ) made in Japan, and the writing is robust and ever changing in style, which is considered to be by Fujiwara no Sadanobu (1088-?) judging by his other existing examples.
