The Shinsen’en was a large imperial garden in the Heian capital located to the south of where Nijō Castle is now. This set of diagrams depicts the layout of this area for its use in a rite praying for rain. The rite involves making offerings to the dragon king through esoteric ritual; it was conducted at Shinsen’en because dragons were believed to reside in its pond. The ritual implements and other objects selected for use in performing the rite are blue.
